Each Arabica coffee varietal possesses its own distinct flavor profile. Blending the palate of two or more coffee bean varietals can create a vast array of wonderful new flavors.
Blending coffee can occur either before roasting or after roasting the green coffee beans. Pre-roast coffee blending involves combining each distinct green coffee bean varietal used for a particular coffee blend, then putting the entire mixture into the coffee roaster at the same time.
The pre-roast blending method does not take into account the different sizes of coffee beans and consequently the different roast times of each coffee bean varietal. Instead, all the different coffee bean varietals are roasted for the same amount of time. Pre-roast blending will cause the smaller coffee beans to be over roasted and the larger coffee beans to be under roasted, ultimately resulting in bad-tasting coffee.
Post-roast blending is the exact opposite. After each coffee bean varietal is separately roasted to its best profile, the coffee beans are then blended. By blending the coffee beans post-roasting, each blend has a cleaner and more consistent flavor. At Allann Bros Coffee, all of our coffee blends are blended post-roast.
