Storing Coffee: Keeping coffee fresh

Like most coffee lovers, we demand that our coffee taste fresh. Our commitment to quality and freshness can best be exemplified by the batch roasting technique that we employ. By roasting small coffee batches, we can roast to order rather than storing coffee for an extended period of time.

If you brew coffee at home and you want to ensure that your first cup of coffee maintains the same level of quality as the last cup of coffee, we have a few helpful tips.......

Time is coffee's worst enemy
The best way to keep coffee fresh is to only have enough coffee to last you a reasonable amount of time; a one-week supply is what we recommend. By buying your coffee on a more frequent schedule, it will help guarantee that each cup achieves its maximum taste potential.

Coffee is best stored in whole bean form
Grinding coffee just prior to brewing produces a much superior cup of coffee versus storing it pre-ground. Ground coffee loses its natural oils faster than whole bean coffee, making it stale and compromising its taste. Whole bean coffee stays fresher longer because its fire-roasted shell locks in its natural oils and flavors.

Direct sunlight will rob coffee of its taste
Sunlight is the easiest of coffee's natural enemies to combat. It is best to keep your whole bean coffee in a cool, dry place, preferably between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and out of direct light. A cupboard or pantry is ideal because the light is limited and temperature doesn't fluctuate as much.

Storage Container
Air is another natural enemy of coffee. If we can reduce the whole bean coffee's exposure to air, we can diminish air's effect on its taste and freshness.

The perfect container to reduce contact with air is a glass or ceramic jar with a rubber gasket. This will ensure an airtight closure. If a container like this is not an option, then tightly closing the Allann Bros bag will do the trick as well.

Post-Brewing Storage
You should store freshly brewed coffee in a preheated vacuum container with a glass or stainless steel inner lining, like a coffee airpot or thermos. To preheat the container, fill it with hot water and let it stand for a few minutes. Dump out the water & replace with coffee. A container of this kind can keep freshly brewed coffee hot for a long time. Additionally, it will help keep the freshly brewed coffee from breaking down and losing its flavor.
